On December 10, 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that 33 people from 5 states had become ill with E. coli O157:H7 infections after eating Organic Spinach & Spring Mix in late October and early November, 2012. New York state reported 26 E. coli cases, while Connecticut reported 2 E. coli cases, Massachusetts reported 3, and Pennsylvania and Virginia each reported 1 E. coli case associated with the consumption of the salad mix.
According to the CDC, 13 E. coli case patients were hospitalized after eating the salad mix, which was produced by State Garden, a Massachusetts company and was sold at Wegmans and other retail outlets. 2 E. coli patients developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a complication of E. coli infection that can cause kidney failure and central nervous system impairment.

Wegmans recalled its “Wegmans Food You Feel Good About Organic Spinach & Spring Mix” on November 1, 2012 after the spinach products were identified as the potential source of the E. coli outbreak.
