At least 60 Ill in E. coli outbreak


In November of 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  linked romaine lettuce purchased at salad bars in multiple Schnucks grocery store locations to an E. coli outbreak that has sickened 60 people in 10 states: Arizona (1), Arkansas (2), Georgia (1), Illinois (9), Indiana (2), Kansas (3), Kentucky (1), Minnesota (3), Missouri (37), and Nebraska (1).  Of those, 30 were hospitalized and at least two developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

E. coli Lawsuits Filed Against Schnucks

In December, 2011 Marler Clark filed a lawsuit on behalf of a woman who contracted an E. coli infection that lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome.  Later that month, another lawsuit was filed against Schnucks on behalf of a 61-year old Missouri man.

E. coli and HUS

E. coli infection, which is characterized by bloody diarrhea, can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS.  HUS can cause kidney failure.
