Hartford City Subway Norovirus Outbreak

The Blackford County Health Department along with the Indiana Board of Health have linked a Subway restaurant in Hartford City, Indiana to a norovirus outbreak that has sickened at least 90 people, including two hospitalizations. The restaurant closed on January 10, 2012 for cleaning and inspection and has yet to reopen as of January 13.
Past Outbreaks Linked to Subway
Subway has been linked to at least three separate foodborne illness outbreaks that have sickened at least 269 since 1999. Two of the outbreaks occurred in Illinois and were tied to Salmonella, while a third was a Washington state hepatitis A outbreak.
Norovirus causes over 23 million cases of gastroenteritis annually, making it the leading cause of gastroenteritis in the United States. Typically symptoms of norovirus infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Sometimes headache and low-grade fever appear. Norovirus develops 24 to 48 hours after contaminated food or water is ingested and lasts for 24 to 60 hours. In some cases, severe dehydration, malnutrition, and even death can result from norovirus infection, especially among children and among older and adults with compromised immune systems in hospitals and nursing homes
