Harmony Farms Salmonella Outbreak - Washington and Oregon
In 2003, Harmony Farms of Auburn, Washington, recalled alfalfa sprouts that had been distributed to wholesalers, retail outlets, and restaurants throughout the West Coast after at least 16 people in Oregon and Washington reported becoming ill with Salmonella infections subsequent to consuming the sprouts.
In an effort to prevent future outbreaks, Harmony Farms changed its procedures for growing and processing its sprouts; however, a second Salmonella outbreak a year later and led to another recall.
