Diamond Pet Foods Linked to Salmonella Outbreak
At least 16 humans have become ill with Salmonella infections after having contact with pets or with Diamond brand pet foods that are contaminated with Salmonella serotype Infantis. 5 people reportedly required hospitalization due to the severity of their Salmonella infections.
Diamond Pet Foods, sold under a variety of brand names, are the source of a Salmonella outbreak, according to a May 3, 2012 announcement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At least 14 U.S. citizens and 1 Canadian have become part of the pet food-linked Salmonella outbreak.
Testing Reveals Salmonella in Dry Pet Food
The CDC stated that the outbreak strain of Salmonella Infantis was isolated from an opened bag of Diamond Brand Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula dry dog food and from a sample of Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food.
Salmonella infections linked to dog food in several states
According to the CDC, residents of Alabama, Connecticut, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia became ill with Salmonella infections between October 8, 2011 and April 22, 2012. Most people who became ill with Salmonella infections reported contact with a dog in the week before becoming ill.
Diamond Dog Foods Recalled for Salmonella Contamination
Diamond Pet Foods has recalled 13 brands of dry pet food formulas that were manufactured in its Gaston, SC facility. All batches manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 are affected. Several other brands of dog food, manufactured by Diamond for third parties, are also being recalled. The recall includes some Kirkland brands and dry dog food sold under other brand names.
