Del Monte Cantaloupe Sold at Costco Source of Salmonella Outbreak
Marler Clark Salmonella attorneys investigated a Salmonella outbreak traced to Del Monte cantaloupe sold at Costco stores in Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. According to the FDA, the Salmonella-contaminated cantaloupes that were the source of the outbreak were grown in Guatemala.
In another recall involving contaminated cantaloupe, the Food and Drug Administration stated that there was a link between Del Monte cantaloupe and approximately 13 reported cases of Salmonella serotype Panama in the following states: Washington (4 cases), Oregon (5 cases), California (2 cases), Colorado (1 case), and Maryland (1 case) in March of 2011. Del Monte Fresh put on hold the production and distribution of the potentially Salmonella-contaminated product from the affected farm called Asuncion Mita, which is located in Guatemala.
Cantaloupe Recalled for Salmonella Contamination
The products recalled by Del Monte for potential Salmonella contamination consisted of cartons of cantaloupes, each containing 4 plastic beige mesh sleeves each sealed with a plastic orange handle with the Del Monte logo and indication “3 count, Product of Guatemala” with 3 cantaloupes per sleeve. The cantaloupes were available for sale at Costco locations between the 10th of March and the 21st of March, 2011.
Symptoms of Salmonella Infection
Symptoms of Salmonella infection begin anywhere from 6 to 72 hours after a person ingests Salmonella bacteria and typically last 3 to 7 days, though in some cases can last longer and be potentially fatal. Symptoms include abdominal pain and cramping, diarrhea, and dehydration. In some cases they may include vomiting, headache, and body aches.
