OK Heath Officials:  Well Water Didn’t Cause E. coli Cases

September 1 2008

Oklahoma health officials said contaminated well water is not to blame for an E. coli bacteria outbreak in the northeast part of the state.

E. coli is blamed for killing one man and making 175 others sick, including dozens of children.

The outbreak has been linked to the Country Cottage restaurant in Locust Grove, where many of the victims had eaten.

Initial lab tests confirmed that the restaurant’s well water tested positive for E. coli, but now health officials said they doubt it is the source of the outbreak.

Country Cottage is closed while health officials continue the investigation.
